TSMC's Q2 Blowout and the Semi Selloff: What C.C. Wei Actually Said

The numbers were stellar. The stock fell anyway. The real story is in the transcript.

Taiwan Semiconductor reported a second quarter that should have sent the stock higher. Revenue hit $40.2 billion. Gross margin reached 67.7 percent. Full-year growth guidance jumped to "above 40 percent," and capex surged to $64 billion. The stock fell nearly 2 percent anyway. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.8 percent. The real story is not in the numbers. It is buried in the transcript of Chairman C.C. What did TSMC actually deliver in Q2 2026?

CFO Wendell Huang laid out a record. Every top-line metric came in at or above the guidance range.

High-performance computing (the bucket holding AI accelerator revenue from Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom) hit $26.5 billion, up 20 percent sequentially. Smartphone fell to roughly 20 percent of the mix. The 3 nanometer node contributed 30 percent of wafer revenue. The 2 nanometer node shipped its first meaningful volume at 3 percent of revenue.

Why did the stock fall despite the record numbers?

TSMC missed the gross margin whisper by a single percentage point on the Q3 guide, and the market fixated on it. Q3 gross margin of 65 to 67 percent (midpoint 66%) landed below the roughly 67.5 percent whisper.

Huang explained the culprit: the 2 nanometer ramp will dilute margins by 3 to 4 percentage points in the second half, and overseas fabs in Arizona, Japan, and Germany will add another 2 to 4 percentage points of drag over time.

The margin trajectory is not deteriorating. It is being intentionally reinvested. Every point of margin dilution from 2nm and overseas fabs buys TSMC another decade of geopolitical hedge and node leadership.

What did C.C. Wei say about competition from Samsung and Intel?

The most important exchange on the call was not about margins. It came when an analyst asked Wei about competition from Samsung and Intel. His answer is the most concise summary of TSMC's competitive position ever put on a call.

Choosing a technology, ramping it up, is not buying a milk from 7-Eleven. Well, I'm quoting the sentence from my customer. It's not that today you think this milk is better, you go to the next store, it's a 7-Eleven. You don't like it, you go to another store. No.

Wei then laid out the three pillars that cannot be bought with government subsidies or memory-level profits.

Technology, manufacturing, and customer trust. These three fundamental never change.

It takes five to seven years to build that trust. Samsung cannot buy it. Intel cannot subsidize its way into it. The 2 nanometer ramp and the A14 roadmap, which Wei said is "even larger and long-lasting than N2," extend that moat for years.

On Intel specifically, Wei was subtle but direct:

The other one in the U.S., they got a very strong U.S. government support. We also got the government support, by the way, although we don't announce it.

The Arizona investment is TSMC's geopolitical hedge, and it comes with its own quiet US government support.

How does TSMC read the demand picture from every customer?

Wei offered the most sophisticated capacity planning logic in the industry, distilled to a single insight: every customer is over-ordering, and his job is to figure out by how much.

I believe every customer tell me the truth. Everyone. You put all the truths together, it's not the truth. We have to make some of the judgment. All the customers are very aggressive. That's a CEO's job. CEO got to be aggressive.

The antidote is a disciplined cross-checking system. TSMC monitors data center construction progress to verify that chips are being deployed, not stockpiled. When Deutsche Bank asked whether unconstrained demand runs 30 to 50 percent above supply, Wei stopped himself:

The gap is very big. Sorry, I don't want to make a comment on the memory.

The implication was clear. The real gap is likely much larger, possibly a multiple of what any single customer admits.

Wei then framed the demand thesis in the broadest terms he has ever used.

We are witnessing a kind of a new industry. I would like to say the new industry called AI industry, which is so common in our daily life because you're going to affect our automotive, affect the humanoids, robot, and also impact to all the industry.

The demand, he said, runs "from this day on all the way to probably 2029, 2030."

What does TSMC's capex signal mean for the equipment complex?

Buried in Huang's prepared remarks was a single sentence that resets the multi-year outlook more than any quarterly guide ever could.

The next three years will be even more significantly higher than the past three years.

Not slightly higher. Significantly higher. Combined with the raised 2026 capex guide, this is the purest signal for the equipment supply chain in over a decade.

Every dollar TSMC spends flows through the equipment supply chain. ASML's EUV lithography, Applied Materials' deposition and etch, KLA's inspection, Lam Research's etch tools. Huang noted that 70 to 80 percent of 2026 capex goes to advanced nodes, 10 to 20 percent to advanced packaging, and the remainder to specialty technologies.

ASML was the only green name in the sector Thursday, up 0.3 percent, buoyed by its own strong Q2 report and the direct read-through of TSMC's capex hike. KLA, now deeply oversold with an RSI of 26, may be the most dislocated name in the basket relative to the signal.

What is the packaging bottleneck, and who does it hurt?

Advanced packaging was supposed to be solved. It is not. Wei was blunt.

Our packaging capacity is so tight that now it's limiting my customers' growth.

TSMC is still the sole gatekeeper for CoWoS, the packaging technology that binds AI accelerators to high-bandwidth memory. When CoWoS is tight, Nvidia's Rubin ramp slows. When Rubin slows, HBM demand softens. That is why Micron fell 5 percent Thursday despite the structural bull case for memory.

Wei's response to competition from Intel's EMIB packaging technology was pure strategic thinking.

I welcome that the competitor offers some of the flexibility to my customer so that their front-end wafer can be put into the package, and that help TSMC's front-end wafer business.

Let Intel handle the lower-value packaging. TSMC keeps the wafer. That is a business model moat, not just a technology one.

What is agentic AI's read-through for CPUs?

Wei introduced a new thesis that has been missing from the AI narrative.

The emergence of agentic AI is leading to a resurgence in the role of CPUs in AI data centers, which drive more silicon demand in addition to AI accelerators.

GPUs got the headlines. But agentic AI workloads, the kind that autonomously reason and act, need CPUs for orchestration, memory management, and general-purpose compute. Whether the architecture is x86, ARM, or RISC-V, "they are almost all TSMC's customers." This expands TSMC's total addressable market beyond accelerators into the broader server silicon stack. For ARM, trading at $257 after a 7.2 percent rout, the long-term thesis just got stronger even as the short-term tape got uglier.

What is TSMC's actual ceiling on gross margin?

The most revealing line on the call may also explain why TSMC's stock will never trade at the premium bulls want. When an analyst noted that memory competitors enjoy 86 percent gross margins, Wei did not promise to match them. He set a ceiling.

I'm really jealous about memory companies, 86 percent gross margin. 86 percent? About 68 percent, I would be happy about that.

Wei has made a deliberate strategic choice. He will not squeeze customers the way memory makers can.

I don't want to squeeze them out from the market. We are very trustable. We don't suddenly increase our price by, which I like to have, a 4x or 5x.

The long-term partnership model keeps customers locked in. It also caps how much earnings can grow in any single quarter. The market wants pricing power. Wei gave it a masterclass in restraint.

How did the ripple hit the ecosystem?

The damage radiated in concentric circles across the semi complex. Memory and storage absorbed the worst of it. AI chip designers took the second-worst. Equipment names held up best.

Nvidia fell 2.6 percent, below its gamma flip level of $212.28, meaning dealer hedging now amplifies every move lower. AMD was the AI chip bright spot on flow: block buys of $328 million against $78 million in block sells, suggesting institutional dip-buying. Intel fell 4.1 percent ahead of its July 23 report where it must answer TSMC's Arizona challenge directly. Qualcomm fell 2.9 percent after Wei specifically flagged "consumer and the price-sensitive end market segment are being challenged due to the impact of rising component prices."

The equipment names held up best. ASML gained 0.3 percent. Applied Materials fell only 1.4 percent. KLA fell 1.3 percent but is the only name in the basket at oversold levels. TSMC's capex signal is unambiguous for the wafer fab equipment supply chain, and the market is beginning to price the distinction between chip makers who spend and chip makers who sell.
