SpaceX Q2: How $7.8B Becomes $100B ARR by December

First public earnings beat, Starlink hits 12M subs, AI capex hits $15.8B, and the math behind the $100B run-rate claim

SpaceX reported Q2 2026 after the close Aug 4, its first as a public company. Revenue was $7.8B, up 92% year over year from $4.1B, beating $6.81B consensus. Adjusted EBITDA was $3.5B vs $2.0B expected. Net loss was $541M, improved from $1B a year ago. The stock closed $125.33, up 9.4% on the day, still below the $135 IPO price, then slipped after hours.

The headline that moved the call was not Q2. It was December. CFO Bret Johnsen said SpaceX is on a trajectory, including Cursor, to reach $100B of ARR, or annualized revenue run rate, by year end, based on expected revenue in the month of December.

That is not Q2 times four. It is December times twelve.

The headline numbers

How $100B ARR by December works

$100B ARR means $8.33B in December alone. Q2 averaged $2.6B per month. The bridge needs 3.2x in six months.

Johnsen laid out the pieces:

  1. AI cloud is now the driver. Q2 AI was about $0.87B per month on average. Already signed before Q2 were Google at $920M per month, Anthropic taking all of Colossus 1 in Memphis, and Reflection AI at $150M per month. In the first weeks of Q3, SpaceX signed another $6.7B of cloud services over six months starting October, or about $1.1B per month incremental. That alone pushes AI to $3B to $4B per month by December if ramps hold.
  2. Cursor. The $60B acquisition of Anysphere, maker of Cursor, is expected to close in Q3. Cursor was roughly $500M to $1B ARR in early 2025 and growing fast. SpaceX will count its subscription revenue in ARR and bundle Grok plus Cursor sales.
  3. Starlink still growing. Q2 was a record +1.7M net adds vs +1.4M in Q1, ending at 12M subs, double year over year. ARPU flat at $66 vs Q1, down from $85 a year ago. Each 1.7M adds is about $112M of incremental monthly recurring revenue.

To hit $8.33B in December, a plausible mix is Starlink $1.8B per month, Space $0.3B, and AI plus Cursor $6.2B. That is why the stock slipped on capex. Q2 AI capex was $15.83B of the $18.37B total, more than double Q1's $7.7B.

Starlink: still the cash engine

Connectivity was $4.3B, driven by record subs and enterprise plus government up 108% year over year. Gwynne Shotwell said enterprise and government could exceed consumer over time.

Aviation is the tell. Signed American Airlines in Q2, activated Southwest, Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, Aer Lingus. Shotwell said passengers are booking shorter hops to stay on Starlink flights. Penetration in aviation is still under 10%.

Government: over $6B in US Space Force contracts in Q2. Mobile: new partners SoftBank, NTT Docomo, Spark NZ. Priority is launching mobile V2 sats on Starship, then integrating 65 MHz of EchoStar spectrum next year after FCC approval, which Shotwell called a foundational competitive advantage.

Constellation is about 10,200 operational sats, 9,600 broadband delivering about 800 Tbps downlink.

Starship: the 100x bandwidth bet

Elon said two successful V3 flights in the last 90 days. Flight 13 proved orbital and return to Starbase catch. Flight 14 will be first to deploy V3 Starlink sats to operational orbit. Goal is to catch both stages this year.

Scale framing: Falcon delivers about 2,500 tons per year to orbit, rest of world about 300 tons, so 80% to 90% share. Starship goal is over 1M tons per year, ultimately 10M.

V3 Starlink sat is about 10x more capable than V2, plus about 10x more sats per launch, so about 100x bandwidth. Even if price per bit drops 10x, still 10x revenue. Elon: not out of the question that Starlink will deliver a majority of the world's Internet in under 10 years.

AI: the swing factor

End 2026: over 2 GW online. End 2027: closer to 10 GW than 5 GW, per Elon.

Nvidia exclusive: Vera Rubin is the best AI computer ever, per Elon. Nvidia shares rose about 2% after hours on that. Partnership on Starmind AI1 payload, Rubin GPUs plus Vera CPUs, 250 kW peak, datacenter class in orbit, launches start next year. Same design to be deployed on ground.

Grok: 4.5 was a huge improvement, token consumption tripled after July release. 4.6 next week, 4.7 in 3 to 4 weeks, Grok 5 before year end trained on entire SpaceX corpus to be by far the best engineer.

Customers named: Google and Anthropic. Cursor $60B deal expected to close Q3. CFO said AI capex has less than a one year payback, capex moving so fast it is becoming almost COGS.

Ad revenue was $367M, down 14% year over year on migration to new X Ads Manager.
